The control, or lack thereof, that humans have over machines has fueled the imaginations of science fiction writers since the earliest days of the genre. Today, our smartphones help us navigate to where we are going, alert our families that we are on our way, remind us of upcoming appointments and deadlines, and entertain us with music and videos, as the authors of speculative fiction imagined decades ago that they would do.
The science fiction genre also imagined what would happen if the machines went rogue, and now we see it with our own eyes, with chatbots remixing the information they have been taught and responding to our prompts with bot speak that sounds just convincing enough that we are not sure whether to believe it and we cannot figure out how to corroborate or disprove it.
While we might focus our worries on chatbots and deepfakes, another machine endangers us with the threat of rebellion every day, and yet we rely so heavily on its compliance that we take it for granted, and that is our car. People rely on cars to go everywhere, especially in places like Louisiana, where there is little reliable public transportation. If you got injured in a car accident when a car suddenly stalled, contact a Houma car accident lawyer.
One evening in April 2025, a Chevrolet Traverse stalled in the middle northbound lane of I-49. The driver got out to try to push his stalled vehicle out of the road. While he was doing this, the driver of an approaching car attempted to swerve out of the way, but he ended up striking both the disabled vehicle and the driver who was attending to it. Emergency personnel transported the injured driver to the hospital, but he died of his injuries later that day. News reports did not release his name or provide any other details of the accident.
If a driver hits a stalled vehicle, the insurance company or court might assign some of the fault to the driver who failed to avoid the obstacle, but if the car stalled suddenly in a place where it was hard to avoid hitting it, then the driver who hit the stalled car might not get 100 percent of the fault. In other words, the insurance companies will acknowledge that the car stalling in the road contributed to the accident. How this affects fault for the accident depends on why it stalled. If your car stalled because you failed to maintain it properly, that fault belongs to you. If it stalled because of a manufacturer’s defect, that fault belongs to the car manufacturer.
