Adolescence is as mind-boggling for those who are in the thick of it as it is for people who aged out of it decades ago. Teenagers are at once adults and children, full of confidence but lacking in judgment, or else insightful beyond their years but too cautious for anyone to notice. In some places, teens spend vast amounts of their parents’ money cultivating their online personas, or else they stay holed up in their bedrooms and play video games until they are well into their 20s. Here in Louisiana, it is easy to find young people who are eager to get a head start on adulthood as soon as they graduate from high school. With engagement rings sparkling and income flowing, they are looking forward to a bright future.
Last summer, a drunk driving accident cut short the lives of a young couple who had just graduated from high school and were building a future together. The driver who caused the accident was the same age as the victims. If you were injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver under the age of 21, contact a Houma car accident lawyer.
Teen Sweethearts Killed by Drunk Driver Too Young to Buy Alcohol
Rylan Oncale and Taliyah Crochet began dating during their junior year of high school and were still together when they graduated in 2024. That summer, Taliyah got a job waiting tables at Waffle House, while Rylan followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and got a job as a deckhand with Gulf Logistics. He spent 28 days out on a boat and then came home to Raceland to visit his family before his next assignment as a deckhand.
One night while Rylan was home, he and Taliyah went out together with two other friends in Rylan’s Kia. He was driving on Louisiana 3090 when a Jeep Grand Cherokee crossed the center lane and struck his car head-on. Rylan and Taliyah were both wearing seatbelts, but they both suffered fatal injuries. They were both 18 years old. The two passengers in the back seat suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Axel Flores-Cordova, was also 18 years old at the time of the accident. His blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.13%; this is above the legal limit of 0.08% for drivers ages 21 and older. For drivers below the age of 21, the legal limit is 0.02%, which means that Flores-Cordova’s BAC was more than six times the legal limit for someone his age. He is facing criminal charges for vehicular manslaughter, drunk driving resulting in bodily injury, and driving without a license, among other lesser charges.
