Rear-end collisions are one of the most common car accident scenarios. You have probably witnessed a scenario where one car rear-ends another as drivers in stop-and-go traffic misjudge when to stop and when to go. Most rear-end collisions do not cause serious injury because the vehicles involved are not going very fast. In some cases, there is property damage only, and the biggest hassle is trying to get the insurance company to pay enough on your claim that you can break even on your accident-related vehicle repairs. In other cases, you might get a whiplash injury, which is annoying but not permanent or debilitating, but then your insurance claim becomes even more of a hassle because it also involves medical bills. The angle of collision is not the only factor in the severity of an accident, though. Factors like alcohol or drug intoxication, excessive speed, or not wearing a seatbelt can make a rear-end collision as disastrous as a head-on crash. For that matter, big trucks can turn any minor accident into a major one. If you have been injured in a rear-end collision involving a commercial truck, contact a Houma car accident lawyer.
Assumption Parish Man Dies After Car Rear Ends Commercial Truck
In September 2024, a deadly crash happened in Ascension Parish, just outside the city limits of Donaldsonville. A Ford truck was towing a 25-foot flatbed trailer on Highway 70 near the intersection with Highway 3127. The truck reduced its speed so that it could merge into the right lane shortly before it reached the intersection. Because of this unexpected lane change, the car behind it, a 2012 BMW, struck the edge of the trailer.
The driver of the BMW was Laterrius Williams of Belle Rose. He died of injuries sustained in the accident. He was 19 years old.
At the time that news reports were published, the accident was still under investigation. The Gonzales Weekly Citizen website said that Williams was driving at a high speed at the time of the accident. This could increase the share of fault attributed to him for the accident since if he had been traveling more slowly, he might have been able to avoid hitting the truck when it slowed down, or at least, he would have collided with it at a lower speed, which would have increased his chances of survival. Of course, the truck changing lanes so soon before the intersection was also a major contributing factor to the accident. The drivers of tractor-trailers know that it takes longer to slow down and stop and that they need adequate time and space before changing lanes or making a turn.
