When you first get a driver’s license, you might worry that you will hit another car if you misjudge the right time to change lanes or turn from a stop sign onto the main road. You might also worry that, despite your caution, you may be no match for the aggressive, distracted, and careless drivers on the road, and they may hit you even as you make every effort to stay out of their way. In some cases, though, your worst enemy is you. Single-vehicle accidents are just as likely to result in serious injury as those that involve two or more vehicles, even though single-vehicle fender benders where a car strikes a mailbox also occur. Louisiana is prime territory for single-vehicle accidents, too, with its winding roads, mighty tree roots, and bare-bones budget for road repair. If you suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle accident, contact a Houma car accident lawyer.
Fatal Single Vehicle Collisions in Louisiana
These are a few of the fatal single-vehicle accidents that have taken place so far in Louisiana in 2024:
- In March, a man from Maurice was driving on Louisiana Highway 92 in Vermilion Parish when his car veered off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree. The man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. He was 22 years old.
- Also in March, a woman from Lake Charles was driving in Calcasieu Parish when she lost control of her car near the intersection of Opelousas Street and Mitchell Drive. Her car first struck a mailbox and then a culvert. She died of her injuries several hours after arriving at the hospital. She was 47 years old.
- In January, a man from Pride was driving a commercial motor vehicle on Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish. His truck veered off the right side of the road and hit several trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. He was 55 years old.
At the time that the news reports about these accidents were published, police had not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role. The three accidents have one thing in common, though, namely that the drivers were not wearing seatbelts. Whether an accident takes place on the interstate highway, in city traffic, or on an isolated country road, your chances of surviving the accident and avoiding catastrophic injury are much greater if you are wearing a seatbelt.
Even if you were the only driver involved in the accident, other parties may be responsible for contributing to hazards associated with the vehicle or the road. A personal injury lawyer can help you investigate your options for seeking compensation for your accident-related medical bills.
