It is frightening to read the statistics about how many traffic accidents occur on a daily basis, but most traffic collisions do not result in life-threatening injuries. Car accidents are more likely to be minor if they occur on urban streets or in residential neighborhoods because the high concentration of traffic lights is a safeguard against excessive speed. When one of the vehicles involved in a traffic accident is an 18-wheeler truck, however, there is no such thing as a fender bender. Accidents involving commercial trucks are much more likely to involve fatalities or serious injuries, even if the truck was not going very fast at the time of the collision. If you suffered serious injuries when a commercial truck struck your car, contact a Houma car accident lawyer.
Victims Were Traveling Home to Texas for Winter Break
Broderick Moore, Tyran Williams, and Dylan Young were students at Southern University in Baton Rouge, where all three were members of the university’s Human Jukebox marching band. After the fall of 2022, the three students were driving home for winter break; all three of them resided in the Dallas area. In the early evening, they were driving on Interstate 49 north of Natchitoches when their 1999 Jeep Laredo got a flat tire, and they pulled over onto the shoulder to fix it. One of the young men was on the phone when the person at the other end of the line heard a horrible crash and immediately called the police.
An 18-wheeler that had drifted onto the shoulder struck the Jeep, and all three students were pronounced dead at the scene. Moore and Williams were 19 years old, and Young was 21 years old.
The driver of the truck, Clyde Gay, 62, was wearing a seatbelt and did not suffer serious injuries in the collision. After the accident, he remained at the scene and provided a blood sample for toxicology testing. The accident is still under investigation.
Your Rights After a Collision Involving a Commercial Truck Accident
The families of people killed in traffic collisions have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the parties responsible for the accident. When one of the vehicles involved is a commercial truck, the company that owns the truck is legally responsible for any accidents caused by someone driving the truck. Surviving relatives may seek economic and noneconomic damages in a wrongful death claim. In general, most wrongful death lawsuits settle without going to trial, but this is especially true of accidents involving commercial trucks because trucking companies must carry commercial liability insurance with high policy limits because of the risks inherent in truck driving.
