People in Louisiana are generally good at counting their blessings. Here, we have a saying that, if you wake up in the morning and breathe, that is enough of a reason to celebrate, and most of us live by that rule, if the crawfish boils and neighborhood block parties hosted “just because” are any indication. No one appreciates this more than Louisiana’s seniors, though. If you have managed to stick around long enough to be eligible for Medicare, you know how to enjoy every moment.
For every septuagenarian who still enjoys walks, bike rides, fishing, and family gatherings, there are multiple people born the same year he was born who cannot, and he knows this. The right to seek compensation in a wrongful death lawsuit arising from a traffic accident remains the same, regardless of the age of the victim. Grandpa Dies During Emergency Surgery After Hit-and-Run Collision
At age 78, Herman Hall was living his best life. When he was young, he served two tours in Vietnam in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he returned to Louisiana, where he had grown up, and worked for customs until he retired decades later. He remained physically active after retirement; even in his last days of life, he rode his bicycle 28 miles every day.
Just before Christmas in 2024, he was driving on Louisiana Highway 20 in Chackbay with his wife when a car crossed the center lane and struck his car. The driver left the scene, but first responders arrived quickly. Hall’s daughter, Heather Dickerson, just happened to call her parents to check on them as the first responders were arriving. She was surprised to hear her mother say that she and Heather’s father had been in an accident. Hall’s wife did not realize how serious her husband’s injuries were; he was conscious and told the first responders that his only complaint was back pain, but the first responders determined that he probably had internal injuries and needed to be air-lifted to a hospital with a trauma center. At the hospital, he underwent surgery to repair injuries to his intestines, and he received multiple blood transfusions because of the blood loss he had suffered. During the surgery, his heart failed, and he died.
Police eventually determined that the hit-and-run driver was an LSU football player, who faced charges for vehicular homicide. Lacy died by suicide while the criminal case against him was pending. Both Hall’s surviving relatives and Lacy’s have the right to file wrongful death lawsuits in civil court.
