Mardi Gras celebrations in Louisiana are nothing like the rest of the world thinks they are. Much of it is surprisingly family friendly, folks eating boiled crawfish and drinking Dr. Pepper with their relatives, friends, and neighbors. Every man, woman, and child in Louisiana has a fantastic collection of Mardi Gras beads, and we got them simply by standing beside the parade routes and catching them, or perhaps even by picking them up off the ground after the parade float had passed, thank you very much. There is not nearly as much debauchery as the people who have heard thirdhand stories about New Orleans Mardi Gras in the disco era are imagining.
Only some Louisianans are teetotalers, though, and drunk driving surges during Mardi Gras season, as tourists and locals alike hit the road after imbibing. If you get injured in a preventable accident in Louisiana, the courts of Louisiana have jurisdiction to rule on personal injury lawsuits arising from the accident, whether you live in Louisiana or elsewhere. Mardi Gras Parade Float Strikes Pedestrian in Shreveport
On February 8, 2026, emergency personnel responded to a 911 call about a pedestrian being struck by a parade float during a Mardi Gras celebration in Shreveport. The injured person is a 24-year-old woman from Shreveport, and the KSLA news website said that the parade float ran over the woman’s foot. She was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. Her injuries were not life-threatening.
Child Injured in ATV Crash During Jeanerette Mardi Gras Festivities
Meanwhile, in Jeanerette, a boy suffered injuries when an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) struck him. Parade attendees called 911 and reported that shots had been fired on or near the parade route, and police responded to the call. The officers approached the incident scene in ATVs because the area was too crowded for police cruisers to pass. While the ATVs were nearing the parade routes, a young boy dived into the road to catch Mardi Gras beads that a krewe member had thrown from a parade float. The incident happened so quickly that the police ATV was unable to avoid colliding with the child. The WAFB news website said that the boy’s injuries were minor. It described him as a juvenile, but it did not indicate his age.
Both of these incidents sound like they could have been prevented by better organization by local authorities. If the injured people file personal injury claims arising from these accidents, the defendants will probably be the local governments where the accidents took place. The injured people might be able to recover compensation for their accident-related medical bills.
